On Saturday 22 August we held our Annual Gardening Autumn Show at Darley Dale Methodist Church Hall. Even Sherlock Holmes would have scratched his head at the mysterious shaped veg and the story of the missing cake at the Autumn Show.
Due to the adverse weather this year the resilient gardeners of Derbyshire Dales put on a brave effort with their entries. The number of entries was down with a few classes having no entries (sweet peas and jams) for example. The tomato class was well supported as usual with a variety of shapes and colours.
The French horn shaped veg was grown by Alan and is a Tromboncino which is an Italian climbing squash, the taste is very similar to butternut squash.
In the ‘Begonia Give Away Class’, set up early in the year, the judges were Robert and Edward who both brought magnificent examples to show what can be achieved with simple care and careful nurturing. Although Robert and Edward were not allowed to enter their plants but brought them along and they really were fine examples.
Finally the mystery of the missing fruit cake, which disappeared before the judging started, only to be found cut up into slices and for sale with a cup of tea. Fortunately there was just enough left to enter the class and after all that it was award a first. There was also a small plant sale which did very well.
Finally I would like to thank the exhibitors, committee and helpers who made the show a success. So keep on growing and nurturing, and let’s do it again next year.
