- [Annual Gardening Autumn Show ](https://ddhs.org.uk/annual-gardening-autumn-show/): On Saturday 22 August we held our Annual Gardening Autumn Show at Darley Dale Methodist Church Hall. Even Sherlock Holmes would have scratched his head at the mysterious shaped veg and the story of the missing cake at the Autumn Show. Due to the adverse weather this year the resilient gardeners of Derbyshire Dales put on a brave effort with their entries. - [How to make a bouquet](https://ddhs.org.uk/how-to-make-a-bouquet/): Clair Peat from Stiles & Blooms gave an interesting presentation on how to make a bouquet from home grown flowers. Clair kindly donated it to our raffle, which Wendy Winter won.
- [Annual plant sale](https://ddhs.org.uk/annual-plant-sale/): The annual Plant Sale was on Saturday 9th May. As always, it was very popular and the tea, coffee and homemade cakes went down well.
- [Chatsworth kitchen garden](https://ddhs.org.uk/chatsworth-kitchen-garden/): On Friday 27th March, Mick Brown, the Production Garden Manager from Chatsworth, gave an interesting presentation on The Kitchen Garden.
- [History of National Open Gardens](https://ddhs.org.uk/history-of-national-open-gardens/): A very enjoyable evening with a brief history of National Open Gardens by Hildegard Wiesenhofer, County organiser for Derbyshire. She explained how it all started and how next year it will be its centenary. With the charities they support and encourage everyone to visit a least one garden

- [BBC Gardeners Question Time](https://ddhs.org.uk/bbc-gardeners-question-time/): On 23rd September, Darley Dale Horticulture Society hosted Radio 4 Gardeners Question Time in the Whitworth Institute. The gardening experts answered questions from 20 people, including, committee members Wendy Winter & Sue Thompson. It was an excellent and informative evening! With thanks to Sue Thompson and the committee for making this evening possible.

On Friday 31st of October Don Witton gave an excellent talk on late flowering perennials at Darley Dale Horticultural Society He gave good suggestions to ensure a colourful garden from late August to NovemberThese included some Euphorbias of which he has a wide collection growing on his allotment. He also gave suggestions for types of Persicarias, Red-hot pokers, pink crocosmias, White loosestrife, sedums, Hesparanthus and Aconitum and golden rods still flowering in November after being clipped earlier on in the season. - [Edward Cook, 'The Importance of Native Planting'](https://ddhs.org.uk/edward-cook-the-importance-of-native-planting/): On the 25th September Edward Cook gave a talk about about ‘The Importance of Native Planting’. There was a quiz, props, and a focus on the science and what we can all do to improve our gardens/land for wildlife.
- [Breezy Knees](https://ddhs.org.uk/2924-2/): On June 4th, we had our trip to Breezy Knees. It certainly was breezy but that didn’t stop us from having an enjoyable time. Expert gardeners were busy planting and happy to answer our questions. The gardens were thoughtfully designed, with paths suitable for everyone. Some hidden extras to make us smile. There were many purchases made in the Nursery.
- [Bring a stem each month](https://ddhs.org.uk/bring-a-stem-each-month/): Bring along a stem from your garden. When everyone comes in, they will be given a button and during the break we ask you to use your button to vote for your favourite stem. The winner takes away all the stems at the end of the evening. There is always something in your garden. We would love you to have a go.
- [Ed Cook - the importance of native planting](https://ddhs.org.uk/2882-2/): Ed Cook from www.MeadowMakers.co.uk will be with us on Friday 26th September at 7.30, to give a talk on the importance of native planting. There will be a quiz, props, and a focus on the science and what we can all do to improve our gardens/land for wildlife. The usual refreshments and chat, and of course plants to buy. We look forward to seeing you there.
- [Darley dale Horticultural Society hosts BBC Radio 4 GQT](https://ddhs.org.uk/darley-dale-horticultural-society-hosts-bbc-radio-4-gqt/): BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time came to Dalydale on Tuesday – and what a treat it was! The hall was packed with a capacity audience of over 150 keen gardeners, all eager to see the panel in action. Bunny Guinness and her fellow panellists entertained everyone with their trademark mix of expert advice, good humour, and fascinating gardening insights. The atmosphere was buzzing as audience members asked a wide range of questions, from tricky plant problems to big design dilemmas. Laughter and applause filled the room as the panel shared their tips and stories – it was a wonderful evening […]
- [Great plant sale despite change of location](https://ddhs.org.uk/great-plant-sale-despite-change-of-location/): This year’s plant sale was held outside the entrance of the Methodist Church as the hall is being renovated, but it didn’t stop the bargain hunters who cleared the fabulous home grown annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and house plants. We made a fabulous £609 on the day, the left overs then slipped away on a sales table out side my house so far raising another £30. Great thanks to all our donations from members and the committee and also a huge thanks for everybody’s hard work on the day with refreshments and selling. This year we also had James of JC […]

- [New start time for February meeting](https://ddhs.org.uk/new-start-time-for-february-meeting/): The meeting on Feb 24th is now going to start at 13:30. We are trying a daytime meeting to avoid people coming out in the possible weather/dark/cold.

- [1980 - 2020](https://ddhs.org.uk/1980-2020/): In 1979 local school teacher and Methodist lay preacher John Billingham had the idea of forming a Horticultural Society in Darley Dale. With the help of other locals, including Lewis Jackson and Ernest Paulson, enough interest was soon was gathered. On 10th January 1980 a meeting was held at the Whitworth Institute and the Darley Dale Horticultural Society was born!

Try honey!](https://ddhs.org.uk/having-trouble-rooting-cuttings/): Dip your fresh cuttings in liquid honey; it’s a natural antibacterial and anti fungal natural product and should help those cuttings to root instead of rot! This was just one of the many useful hints and tips Darren Rudge gave us at our October 2019 meeting. Darren (also known as ‘the laughing gardener’) will return in September 2020 to deliver the third talk in his series ‘Tea Bags, Bras and Tights!’
